When you have great camps but you don't have the money to go up against the big guys in your area I suggest using testimonials. I get testimonials from parents through online surveys. Speaking from a non-profit standpoint also, I agree it is hard to make our camps standout compared to others who have the money and marketing resources to make their camps "appear" superior. Although I am confident we have some of the best if not the best camps in our area, we are sometimes overlooked due to our lack of marketing expertise. I am looking forward to trying out this idea. Should you not give someone a chance to learn how to cook if they have a passion for it? How does someone become a professional? They learn and practice, whether through schooling or trial and error. So they find someone on staff who has an interest in learning how to do it. That's the way it happened with me. We needed someone who could design the brochure. I volunteered. I taught myself how to use InDesign and Photoshop through online videos at Lynda.com. Then I looked at brochures and activity guides from other organizations, as well as magazine covers, for ideas. I have gotten a lot of praise and compliments on my work and have been hired to do freelance graphic design jobs based on my work.
