What Do You Think of EOT?

Recently I have heard a lot of good things about Expert Online Training. I have been to their site to look around and watch some free videos but I haven’t actually gone through their training.

Have you?

What do you think?

I want to hear your HONEST feedback of EOT.

I really like the idea of having my staff go through videos for training before they go through our inhouse training. Especially since the videos are by known camping experts.

Every summer I try to get my staff to go to local trainings but the trainings are usually weeks before summer and a majority of my staff are away at college, unable to attend any other staff trainings but our own.

Expert Online Training seems to be a really good alternative. They can watch the videos wherever they are in the world. The problem is that it’s pretty pricey (at least for us) and I don’t want to invest in something if it isn’t really going to benefit us. Of course, it’s much less expensive then having one of those experts actually come to our camp to do training.

So again, if you have participated in the training from Expert Online Training I want to know what you think.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

  1. I think the content is good. But we had struggled with staff watching them before camp, making sure they all did. A video is nice, but it’s not a substitute for going over things face to face with your staff at camp.

  2. It’s great content. I ran into the same thing as Chris, however. I found that our staff put it off until right before the due date I set. To me, it was an “assignment” and not something that they used as ongoing development. We are using it only for our new staff this year instead of paying for all 120 staff members.

We plan on using some of the videos on-site (with a debrief) for everyone to help break up staff training. Who doesn’t love a video? Remember how excited you were when your 3rd grade teacher wheeled in the TV/VCR cart?

  3. I really like that the content comes from experts in the field and that it covers a broad range of topics. I would still prefer to have an in-person orienation session, because there are lots of things that you want to cover through scenarios or other ways. I’ve also noticed that the attention span wanes much sooner when people watch training videos on a computer… I want to be sure they’re paying attention and a simple quiz at the end isn’t enough.

  4. Kara, I agree with you about having someone live and in person to do training but having one of these experts come to my camp would be a lot more expensive the EOT. I’m considering using a projector to show the videos during our regular staff training so that I can make sure my staff is paying attention and we can discuss it right then and there.

Thanks Adam and Chris for your feedback. I can see my staff doing the same thing – waiting until the last minute. Again, I agree, Chris, that these would make effective training videos when the whole staff is together.

  5. I think the videos have good content but the quiz at the end was bogus.I failed the homesickness quiz because the answer to a question about what to do with a child who is unconsolable was to print out the information from the video and give it to my camp director. I’ve been working at camps for almost 10 years and that is not going to help in any way.
